As most of you know we are all feral cats Mom rescued from our neighborhood - well except for the first two Chica and Yoko who were adopted when the beans lived in Florida. We are very grateful that Mom helped get us all spayed/neutered and then let us live out our lives. Some of us stayed outdoors in a cool shelter Pop built but when they moved two years ago they took us all with them. None of her old neighbors wanted to help take care of us and if she took us to a shelter we would be euthanized cuz most shelters think we can't be rehomed, let alone tamed.
In honor of us we would like to post about a great shelter called Alley Cats and Angels near Raleigh, NC. They have a great Barn Cat Relocation program to rehome feral colonies and also provide great info and assistance to those wanting to help feral cat colonies about TNR. They have adoption programs for strays and those who can be placed. Please visit them and learn more about feral cats. And donate to their feral programs if you can - they rely solely on volunteers and do terrific work. If you live in NC and have a farm or barn that can provide shelter for a colony of ferals please do let them know. The also have a blog for Alley Cats and Angels so be sure to stop by. We follow them.

We're so happy your mom and pop adopted all of you! It's so wonderful what they've done for all of you.
ReplyDeleteWe're going to go check out the web site right now and save it.
Wow we had no idea that there were shelters that would help rehome feral colonies - that is so cool. We aren't in NC (and live in a townhouse in the suburbs) so we can't help with that specifically but it is good to know that places like this exist, if we ever do get a place that could work!
ReplyDeleteAnd we think it is great that your mom and pop adopted you and took you with them when they moved - it is so awesome they are so caring!
Thanks so much for letting us know about Alley Cats and Angels! They sound wonderful. And we're sending many purrs to your humans for adopting you all. Tasha was a feral and she is very domestic, so we know that ferals can make great pets.
ReplyDeleteP.S. The top photo is amazing!
It is so wonderful there are places that will help feral cats. Paws to your Mom & Pop for giving you a home.
ReplyDeleteWe didn't know there were any places that re=-homed feral cats.
ReplyDeleteYou are very lucky friends!
ReplyDeleteMy mommy also adopted me.I was 3 months old and very sick, living inside a "bird cage"in a pet shop.My owner doesn't want me because I was not a pure siamese, so that he left me there. One day mommy Léia was walking and she saw me inside that little bird cage.Immediately she took me at home with her.I think I'm also a fortunate kitty because I have a beautiful family and a place full of love! :)
Good lucky to all those little cats that need a home!
I'm sending love!

I have heard of shelters who take in feral cats and I think it is a wonderful concept and a much needed one! I hate to see feral cats scrounging around for food and shelter and it's great that you are representing a wonderful shelter.

Thanks so much for telling us about Alley cats and Angels. We over and visited and left a comment. And we sure are glad you took in all those kitties at your house. Feral cats are the very best.
ReplyDeleteFeral cats rule! I am a big fan of barn cat relocation programs - there is even one near Los Angeles, the humungo city where we live! This is a great reminder that feral cats deserve homes too.
ReplyDeleteYou kitties are an inspiration. De-feralising or socialising feral cats is a tough game. Looove your work!
ReplyDeletePurrs and headbutts to your mom and pop for helping ferals and giving them love and homes.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the kind words.
ReplyDeleteI am very proud of our barn cat program - it is one of the reasons I founded Alley Cats and Angels. Obviously the best thing for ferals is to stay in their current environment after TNR, but that's not always possible. In May 2008 we responded to a request for help for 8 feral cats behind a shopping center because someone was poisoning them. It turned out there were actually 24 cats and it took a while to catch them all and find them all barn homes but we did it and they are safe. Now we work to try to reason with business and neighborhoods so the cats can stay but if they must be removed we work to find them barn homes.
We have a 98% success rate with cats sticking around after release after confinement period. But we always, always, always need barn homes. There's typically a list of 20+ cats at any given time that need barn/garden homes. We have done relocations to large acre plots without an actual barn but with a safe building to confine the cats and for them to have shelter. Honestly, I *heart* ferals. Love them, love them. Every time I trap one, I wonder if they've ever had anyone say a kind word to them.
And our Alter an Alley Cat program is growing. We've spayed/neutered and vaccinated 99 cats through this program this year alone (in addition to the cats done on our sponsored spay day). Of those, 85% have been feral cats and 15% have been cats owned by families with low incomes. Of the cats, over 90% have been fully subsidized by Alley Cats and Angels with the rest being subsidized by us at 40-75%. Amazing what we can accomplish on a small rescue budget!
*sniff* I love love stories!! Give your mom and pop extra headbutts from us and thank them for pointing us to another great rescue organization. Alley Cats and Angels is a great name!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy I read this post. We have a feral cat we rescued from a colony here and we love her. I was so afraid after TNR that she would run off. And then she didn't!! When I found out that most shelters euthanize feral cats it was a rude awakening. It's so wonderful to know that there are organizations that understand these creatures and strive to place them! BabyCat is certainly still wild but I wouldn't trade her in for the best lap cat in the world!
