Squirrel Appreciation Day - Jan 21

Yup, you heard right - a day to appreciate that pesky squirrel!  Mom is not a big fan of them but we all love watching their antics.  We have a big tree in front of the house and the bird feeder is on that.  As you can see Mr Squirrel gets most of the food!

Me, Lily watching all the excitement!
Mom tried scaring them off but they would always come back.  So she moved the feeder over closer to our window under the eaves.   This did frustrate Mr Squirrel to no end!

He would jump from the railing to the feeder and hang on for dear life as he slid off.  He even climbed up the screen to see if he could reach the food...but not!  It was pretty funny to see all this.

Then one day, he and his buddies figured how to do it and now they hang upside down from the feeder just outside the window.  Pretty cheeky!  Mom has given up and just lets them have their way!

Do you have any funny stories about your squirrels?

  3. Binga really appreciates the couple of squirrels that hang around here - but I don't think they would enjoy her "appreciation!"

  4. Great photo of the squirrel at the window. They climb our screens, too, and it makes us rush from wherever we are in the house to try to get to them every single time we hear that sound.

  5. Squirrels, we must admit, are very smart. Try as we might to trick them, they always figure out a way to get the food. They are fun to watch though!
    Have a happy week friends!

  7. MomFOD used to have a squirrel that lived outside. She called him "Petrie." He would hold the screen door open so she could run and get him a peanut after knocking on the window to ask for one. Then once she saw him on another doorstep having tea. He saw her see him and he looked embarrassed. Serves him right for having tea with another!

  9. I didn't get the memo about squirrel appreciation day, dang! You got some very determined squirrels there, wowza! They sound very entertaining, ours are dull and boring here, not much to appreciate, outside of the occasional squirrel chase as they zoom after each other on the trees.

  18. My Mom is a squirrel lover from waaaay back! Even before she loved cats!
Mom got reported at our apt/condo complex because she started feeding one or two squirrels...well that turned into about a DOZEN. They made a nest in the attic and kept the cranky neighbor woman up at night scampering along the floorboards above her head. Mom was told to STOP feeding the squirrels. Every now and then she will sneak and do it, but rarely. It breaks Mom's heart that she can't feed them.
    Love, Cody

  20. We had a squirrel proof feeder in the UK, but they have possums here (vermin) and they don't eat the birdfood!

We have a squirrel rescue friend who has a blind squirrel she tends - she's an awesome lady.
